Dear Students,

My name is Dr. Spates and I will be the principal at Brown International Academy this year. I am so happy to be your new principal! I am very excited about meeting each and every one of you. Here are some things that I would like for you to know about me:
•I will be in your classrooms all the time because I love to see students learning and teaching.  When I enter your classroom, I want you to keep working. Your school work is very important so please do not stop to talk to me. You can just give me a friendly smile or a wave. We will have plenty of opportunities to visit and chat in the hallways, on the playground, and in the cafeteria, and I will make sure that we get to do that often!
•I LOVE hugs! Please feel free to give me one when you see me in the cafeteria, hallway, or playground.
•I also love receiving letters and artwork. It would make me very happy if you would draw me a picture or write me a letter telling me all about yourself.
•Even though I have the title of “Dr” I am not a medical doctor. I cannot give medicine or medical treatment. I am a doctor of education. This means that I went to college for a very long time (just like the doctors who work in hospitals) in order to become an expert in teaching and learning.
•I will work very hard to make sure that you love coming to school at Brown International Academy each and every day. I will make sure that you have opportunities to HAVE FUN while learning. I will also make sure that you are recognized for making good behavior choices.
•I do not like it at all when I see bullies or children who talk ugly to teachers. This is something that makes me very sad. These are things that I will not allow at our school.
•I believe that it is very important for girls and boys to come to school on time every single day.

I am looking very forward to meeting you, and I want you to come to school on August 10th - ready to learn and ready to make good choices. I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer break!

Love,
Dr. Spates

Dear Parents,

It is with tremendous joy that I have been given the privilege to serve you and your children as principal of Brown International Academy.

I’d like to share a little bit about myself with you. I began my career as an instructional assistant in an alternative classroom at Calvin Donaldson Elementary in 1993. After I received my Bachelors in Early Childhood Education in 1996, I began teaching at Normal Park Elementary where I served for eight years. I left Normal Park in 2004 to pursue a growth opportunity as a lead teacher at Hillcrest Elementary. After receiving my Masters degree in Urban Education, I decided to continue my education and pursue an Educational Leadership post-masters endorsement through UTC’s School Leadership Program.  Finally, I completed UTC’s doctoral program in Learning and Leadership in 2009. I served as assistant principal at Harrison Elementary School for two years, and for the last two years I was the assistant principal at Bess T. Shepherd Elementary.

I am eager to get to know each of you as we partner in the education of your children. I embrace an open-door policy when it comes to parents. I strongly value input and would like to begin our year together giving you an opportunity to share your dreams for our school and areas you perceive to be in need of improvement. Please feel free to email me and share your candid thoughts/opinions about the things you perceive to be going well at BIA, the things you’d like to see improve, and the general ideas you have for taking our instructional program to the next level and strengthening the home-school connection.

I am very much looking forward to working together this year.
