Admission into a magnet school is by application on a space-available basis. Applications for the majority of magnet schools are made available yearly from November 1st to January 31st & seats are then filled by a lottery done in Feb.

After accepting placement & reporting to the school, students are expected to continue in their chosen magnet school through the end of the current school year.  Students may apply to another magnet school for the following year through the application process if they so choose.  If a student is unable to progress to the grade level for which he/she was accepted, he/she will have to attend his/her zone school. 

Zone students are required to provide proof of residency each year.  Placement in a magnet school is not confirmed until the acceptance confirmation letter is received in the magnet office.

Applicants who do not attend a required orientation conference at the selected magnet school will not be considered for admission.

Magnet Process
The acceptance confirmation is an agreement that parents will:

• provide a minimum of 18 involvement hours to BIA (families with students attending different magnet schools must equally split the involvement time served at each school)

• attend at least 2 parent/teacher conferences per year

• make sure their child has a minimal number of unexcused absences and unexcused tardies

• make sure their child follows the Code of Acceptable Behavior & Discipline policy as stated by the HCDE Families who do not complete their minimum involvement requirement will lose the student placement at the magnet school being attended. 

*Current magnet students do not need to reapply to remain at their school.
